Do I need to remove all playsand before installing sod grass or just mix it with soil?

Question

I am converting a sandy play area back to sod grass.   Will i need to remove all the sand before placing sod?   Will i need soil and if i mix it in with existing sand, will the grass grow in healthfully?   What type of grass do you recommend in backyard of North County family home?  Easy to maintain.
